Signs your baby may be ready to sit

Sitting is an important milestone for your baby – it’s the first step towards her becoming independently mobile.

Remember, sitting is a big deal and takes loads of co-ordination. The best way to help prepare her is to ensure she gets tummy time. Placing her on a blanket with some toys around her, or on an activity mat, allows her to learn to explore her environment, while strengthening her back, neck and trunk.

Signs she is ready to sit:

Your baby may be ready to sit if they have good head control. Other bodily motions will also be more controlled and purposeful.

Babies who are ready to sit are also likely pushing themselves up when lying face down and may have learned to roll over.

Your baby may start by sitting for short periods of time if you position them upright. At this early stage, it’s important to support your baby so they don’t fall.
Babies who are nearing the independent sitting milestone, closer to 7 to 9 months, are likely able to roll in both directions. Some may even be scooting back and forth, getting ready to crawl. Some others may experiment with pushing themselves into a tripod position. In this position, the baby is sitting supported by one or both hands on the floor.

It’s likely your baby will be able to hold themselves in a seated position before being able to push themselves into the position on their own. With enough practice, they’ll gain strength and confidence and will be sitting up like a pro in no time.

Once your baby is sitting, try fostering their independence further by practicing the transition from the floor to sitting. Practice will help strengthen all their core muscles and help them gain confidence in this very new position!

Keep in mind that babies develop in their own time. Some babies may sit as early as four months, while others may take nine months to get the hang of it. Tummy time, practicing sitting with support, and providing a little bit of distraction when she is sitting upright, will help her soon get the hang of it. If you are concerned that she may have low muscle tone, or if she’s not reaching her other milestones, chat to your pediatrician.

Once your baby has mastered sitting, she is well on her way to her next major milestones towards independence – crawling!
